How to Write 墨 (mò) — Meaning “ink”

Think of a piece of black earth (黑+土) being ground into ink. Visualize a black ink stick lying on top of a mound of dirt, and the character shows this image.

Pay attention to the top part 黑: it has many strokes, especially the four dots (灬) at the bottom, which must be evenly spaced. Keep the bottom 土 slightly wider to balance the tall top, and do not make the 土 too small.

塌 (tā) means to collapse or fall down, and has a different right part (榻). 塍 (chéng) means a raised path between fields, with a different bottom part. Unlike these, 墨 specifically refers to ink and has 黑 on top, so its meaning is completely unrelated.

墨 appears in everyday words like 墨水 (ink for pens) and 墨镜 (sunglasses). It is deeply tied to traditional Chinese calligraphy and ink painting, where high-quality ink sticks are valued. A common saying, "肚子里没墨水" (no ink in the belly), describes someone who is uneducated.
