Chinese Stroke Order Rules

How to write Chinese characters correctly: the 7 fundamental rules that govern the stroke sequence of every character.

Every Chinese character is written following a specific stroke order. Unlike English where you can form letters in any sequence, Chinese characters have strict rules about which stroke comes first. Learning these rules is essential for legible handwriting, efficient writing speed, and correct use of handwriting recognition tools.

The 7 Basic Stroke Order Rules

1. Top to Bottom (从上到下)

Write upper strokes before lower ones. Example: 三 (sān) — write the top horizontal line first, then middle, then bottom.

2. Left to Right (从左到右)

Write left components before right ones. Example: 你 (nǐ) — write the left radical 亻 first, then the right part 尔.

3. Horizontal Before Vertical (先横后竖)

When strokes cross, write horizontal first. Example: 十 (shí) — horizontal stroke first, then the vertical stroke through it.

4. Outside Before Inside (先外后内)

Write the outer frame before inner strokes. Example: 国 (guó) — write the outer enclosure 囗 first, then the inner 玉.

5. Center Before Sides (先中间后两边)

In symmetrical characters, write the center first. Example: 小 (xiǎo) — vertical center stroke first, then left dot, then right dot.

6. Close Last (最后封口)

The bottom stroke of an enclosure is written last. Example: 回 (huí) — write the outer frame's bottom stroke after completing the inside.

7. Dots and Small Strokes Last (点画最后)

Small dots and minor strokes are added at the end. Example: 玉 (yù) — the dot is the very last stroke.
