How to Write 墙 (qiáng) — Meaning “wall”

Picture a wall made of earth (土) with a small roof on top—the right side 啬 looks a bit like a simple hut or structure. You can think: 'To build a wall, you start with earth and add a roof-like shape above it.'

The left part 土 is narrow, and its bottom horizontal stroke should be slightly shorter than the top one. The right part 啬 has many strokes, so keep them compact and balanced, especially the inner '回'-like shape—make sure it doesn't become too wide.

堙 (yīn) means 'to bury' or 'a mound' and has a different right component (垔). 堞 (dié) means 'battlement' (the notched wall on a city wall) and uses 枼 on the right. While all three have the 土 radical, only 墙 means a general wall.

墙 is used for any physical wall, like 墙上 (on the wall) or 围墙 (perimeter wall). It also appears in cultural expressions such as '墙倒众人推' (when a wall falls, everyone pushes it), meaning people join in attacking someone who is already in trouble. The Great Wall is called 长城, not a simple 墙.
