How to Write 逢 (féng) — Meaning “to meet”

Imagine you are walking (辶) and you bump into a bee (夆 looks a bit like a bee with wings). The bee says "feng!" and you have just met it. This connects the sound féng to the image of meeting a bee while walking.

Start with the 夆 part: draw the top zigzag stroke, then the horizontal lines, and finish the vertical stroke through them. Then add the 辶 radical on the bottom left, making sure its last stroke is a long smooth wave that supports the whole character. A common mistake is making the 辶 too small or forgetting the dot on top.

逢 (féng) means "to meet" and has the component 夆 on top. 迢 (tiáo) means "far" and has 召 on top (calling, distant). 迤 (yǐ or yí) means "winding" and has 也 on top. The top parts are visually different: 夆 has multiple horizontal strokes, while 召 has a knife and mouth, and 也 has a simple hook shape.

逢 is used in positive expressions like 重逢 (to reunite) and 相逢 (to meet by chance). It often appears in greetings and poetry, for example during the Spring Festival people say 每逢佳节倍思亲 (every festival I miss my loved ones more). It is not in HSK but is common in literary and spoken Chinese.
