How to Write 碳 (tàn) — Meaning “Carbon”

Picture a stone (石) next to a mountain of charcoal (炭). Think of carbon as the element that makes both rocks and charcoal black. The right side 炭 contains 山 (mountain) and 灰 (ash), reminding you of carbon from burnt materials.
