How to Write 陟 (zhì) — Meaning “to climb or promote”

Picture yourself stepping (步) up a hill (阝), one foot after another. The right part 步 even looks like two footprints moving upward, so just think "step up the hill" to recall this character.

Write the left ear radical 阝 first (2 strokes), then the right part 步 (7 strokes). Be careful with 步: it is written as 止 on top and 少 below, but without the dot in 少 — the bottom is a small ノ stroke followed by a vertical and a dot. A common mistake is adding an extra dot or confusing 步 with 止加少.
