How to Write 嵛 (yú) — Meaning “Yu (mountain name)”

Think of the right side 俞 as looking like a person (人) beside the moon (月) with a knife (刂). Imagine a person climbing a mountain under the moonlight — that mountain is 嵛. Or simply associate it with the famous Kunyu Mountain (昆嵛山) in Shandong.

First write the 山 radical on the left, then the 俞 part. Make sure the 山 is narrower and sits slightly higher. In 俞, write 人 (top), then 月 (middle), then 刂 (right); do not connect 人 and 月. A common mistake is making the whole character too wide — keep the left and right balanced.

峨 (é) means 'lofty' or is used in 峨眉山, and its right part is 我. 峪 (yù) means 'valley' and has 谷 on the right. 嵛 (yú) is only used in specific place names, so you almost never see it alone. Visually, 嵛 has 俞, while 峨 has 我 and 峪 has 谷.

嵛 is very rare and appears only in proper nouns such as 昆嵛山 (a famous Taoist mountain in Shandong) and 嵛山岛 (an island in Fujian). You will not find it in daily conversation or HSK lists. Knowing it helps when reading about Chinese geography or historical sites.
