How to Write 骖 (cān) — Meaning “Outside horse of a team”

Think of the horse (马) that 'can' (参 sounds like 'can') run on the outside of the team. Visualize three horses pulling a chariot, with the one on the side being the 骖 horse. The right side 参 also looks like a person with three strokes (彡) representing the three horses.

The left part 马 is narrower and takes about one-third of the width; the right part 参 is wider and has three main sections. Be careful to write the top of 参 as 厶 (two strokes), then 大, and finally 彡 (three slanted strokes). A common mistake is making the 马 radical too wide or misordering the strokes in 参.
