How to Write 棼 (fén) — Meaning “Confused or rafter”

Imagine a forest (林) being split apart (分) by a storm – the fallen trees create confusion. Alternatively, think of wooden rafters (木) that need to be divided (分) and arranged, which can be a messy process. This links the shape to both meanings of disorder and wooden beams.

Write the top 林 first, with two 木 side by side, keeping them balanced and not too wide. Then write the bottom 分, making sure the 刀 (knife) component has a clear left stroke and a right hook. A common mistake is making the top too large, which squeezes the lower part and ruins the proportion.
