How to Write 靛 (diàn) — Meaning “Indigo”

Think of "indigo" as a "fixed blue"—the left side 青 means blue, and the right side 定 means fixed. You can imagine a bottle of indigo dye sitting still, its color "set" in place. Also note that 靛 looks like 青 with an extra top part, as if the blue is "stabilized" into a darker shade.
