How to Write 峄 (yì) — Meaning “Yi (name of a mountain)”

Imagine a mountain (山) with a winding path (the bottom part 夅 looks like a zigzag road) leading to the top. As you climb, you shout 'Yi!' to remember the sound. Picture Mount Yi itself in Shandong province for extra association.

The bottom part 夅 has five strokes: start with a dot, then a horizontal, then a vertical, then another horizontal, and finally a downward left stroke. A common mistake is writing it like 聿 (yù) or 丰; the vertical stroke must not cross the top horizontal line.

All three have the mountain radical 山. 屹 has 乞 below and means 'towering' or 'standing firm'. 屺 has 己 below and means a bare mountain. 峄 has 夅 below and is only used as a place name, like Mount Yi.

峄 is very rare and appears mainly in historical place names, such as 峄山 (Mount Yi) in Shandong. It is not in the HSK vocabulary. Culturally, it is famous because Confucius is said to have climbed Mount Yi, so the character appears in classical texts.
